ALS, otherwise known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in that control voluntary muscle movement.
It is categorised a motor neuron disease, in that, it progressively deteriorates and leads to the death of motor neurons.
Currently, there is no known cure for ALS or treatment to reverse or stop progression of the disease. However, Stem Cell Therapy has being used, successfully, as an alternative mode of treatment for ALS.

Arthur Saran’s Story
Arthur Saran was 40 years old when he was diagnosed with ALS. He has been fighting the disease that has left him entrapped in his body for the last one and a half years. In his own words, “you really become a prisoner of your own body with your mind not getting affected at all.”
His girlfriend, Chelsey remembers all too well how it all began. In August 2015, Saran sent her a video of his shaking leg while at the gym. After that other symptoms also started manifesting: his speech became slurred and his balance was unsteady.
The pair did their homework on ALS research and talked to numerous neurologists in the US. Most neurologists said that nothing could be done for Arthur and that they had to “accept it and wait to die”. With resilience and continued research, they learned about Stem Cell Treatments for ALS.

However, finding a trial was another challenge altogether which they overcame; they found a clinic in Canada that had had success with Stem Cell Therapy with a few patients. With a recommendation from his doctor, he signed up and has been going in for Stem Cell Treatments every six weeks.
After four treatment sessions he has shown tremendous improvement: his core is stronger, he swallows a lot easier, he can flex his right arm and move his left thumb, and he can go to the bathroom easily. The couple intends to continue with the treatment and they are hopeful that Saran’s condition will continue improving.
Since Saran’s diagnosis the pair has been vocal in raising awareness on ALS. The costs associated with the treatments amount to thousands of dollars a month which make Stem Cell Therapy treatments inaccessible to many. Acknowledging this fact and having the desire to make sure those that need the treatment have access to it, Arthur and Chelsey have started a foundation.
The Saran Stem Cell Foundation will assist patients in meeting the associated costs of treatment and connect them to get Stem Cell Treatment. Saran is using his journey and experiences to help others in similar situations. “I truly believe that I was given this disease for a reason,” said Saran.
As witnessed in the case of Saran, Stem Cell Therapy shows great potential as treatment option for ALS. Stem cells are characterised by their ability to differentiate into multiple cells and their remarkable elasticity. These attributes make stem cells a valuable source for replacement cells that are therapeutic to diseased areas.
Stem Cell Therapy offers treatments options that modify the function of diseased tissues, slows down or even stops diseases progression, inhibits inflammation, or replaces injured cells.
