In February 2016, a two-year-old girl by the name of Eden Carlson made her way past her family’s baby gate and into the family’s swimming pool. Fifteen minutes passed before she was found in the cold 5℃ water. When found, she was immediately resuscitated and rushed to a nearby hospital.
After a month of treatment at the hospital, Eden remained unresponsive. No form of stimulus would manage to trigger any response from her. At most, she would squirm and shake her head. Initial MRI scans indicated that her brain sustained severe injuries. A loss of white matter, as well as significant damage to Eden’s grey matter, were observed.
Eden’s predicament was an especially dire one, as there has been no successfully documented treatment fully reversing severe Traumatic Brain Injury. Researchers from the Louisiana State University Health New Orleans School and the University of North Dakota School of Medicine urged Eden’s family to explore two types of Oxygen Therapy.
55 days after her accident, Eden underwent a combination of Normobaric Oxygen Therapy, an oxygen treatment which administers oxygen at sea-level pressure and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) which delivers pure oxygen at a slightly higher pressure level than that of our atmosphere. Both treatments aid in providing increased oxygenation to the body’s various systems. The higher level of oxygen entering the body allows it to regenerate and deal with ailments at an increased rate.
Oxygen Therapy Following the Accident
She underwent Normobaric Oxygen Therapy twice a day with each session lasting 45 minutes. The initial observations were that Eden seemed more alert and her squirming lessened. She began to laugh more and her arms and hands could move. Her left hand had regained the ability to grasp small objects. Her eyes’ ability to track movement started to show improvement. Her ability to speak also began to recover.
78 days after her accident, the doctors began to administer HBOT therapy every day, five days a week. 10 sessions into her treatment her mother observed that Eden’s behaviour was already returning to the way it was prior to the accident. When she received 39 sessions of HBOT therapy and Physiotherapy, Eden regained her ability to walk. Her speech had returned to normal, motor function had been restored and her cognitive ability had shown signs of improvement.
An Amazing Recovery
After her 40th session, Eden underwent an MRI scan. Her results were indicative of a near-100% recovery from the damage it received during the accident. The researchers hypothesise that the oxygen therapy and Eden’s young brain activated mechanisms that promote cellular survival and curtailed inflammation. These factors allowed Eden to make an incredible, unprecedented recovery.
