According to statistics provided by the World Health Organisation, every year, 15 million people experience a Stroke. From this figure, roughly ⅓ are expected to die from the condition, while another ⅓ are permanently disabled due to damage caused by the disease. Within minutes, a Stroke can cause massive damage to millions of neurons in the brain. Due to the severity of the disease, researchers are working to develop novel treatments to better address Stroke. One of the most promising treatments under development utilises Stem Cell Therapy.
A study led by Dileep R. Yavaga, Chief of Interventional Neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has found that stem cells are able to identify damaged areas and produce chemical agents that have the ability to rejuvenate tissue that is damaged by the onset of a Stroke.
According to Yavaga, the body is able to naturally perform repairs on damaged brain tissue in Stroke patients. However, he also notes that due to the complex nature of the human brain as well as the gravity of damage commonly observed, the repairs are usually inadequate.
At present, the team is utilising stem cells to augment the body’s natural ability to repair damaged brain tissue. The research yielded a novel achievement, a safe and effective methodology to deliver stem cells to critical, but distant blood vessels within the brain that are central to the natural repair process. The procedure makes use of stem cells derived from bone marrow which is administered intravenously to test subjects suffering from Stroke.
Results from the Study
The initial results of the study have largely been promising. Though the group of patients that benefited from the clinical trial was not at the right size to provide conclusive proof of the treatment’s effectiveness. The researchers are still highly optimistic about the treatment they are developing. They believe that the unique healing capability of Stem Cells can greatly complement conventional treatments to achieve better results in Stroke Patients.
The initial study was conducted on 129 patients who received stem cells extracted from healthy donors within a time frame of 72 hours after the occurrence of each Stroke. The study indicated that the patients who were given stem cells within 36 hours were seen to have experienced a significant benefit in lowering the level of disability experienced by patients at three months recovery from the Stroke.
In the event that larger studies are conducted and show similar results, Yavaga is confident that Thrombectomy coupled with stem cells will make Stroke completely repairable in the near future.
