Epidural Stimulation’s history doesn’t go back that far, but the world of medicine has been preparing for its eventual conception for decades. The process involves the implantation of electrodes that are designed to stimulate different actions in the spinal cord, and it’s made a huge impact on how the world views spinal injury treatment. The implant has been combined with targeted stem cell therapy, and it’s been changing lives ever since.
Lives like one of our recent patients, Isaac Darrell.
Isaac saw his life dramatically change when 4 years ago, a diving accident left him paralysed from the waist down. For someone as athletic and active as he was, his injury was difficult to cope with. The 31-year old didn’t let his condition discourage him though, and he began researching procedures that would help improve his quality of life. During his research into the benefits of stem cell therapy, he learned about specialized clinics in Bangkok and decided it was his best option to help him regain the use of his legs.
When he arrived, he admitted he was taken back by how advanced the facilities were, even when compared to the hospitals in his home country. After meeting the doctors and staff, he was scheduled for, and soon underwent the epidural implant surgery. He was then given doses of stem cells designed to motivate a healing response in the affected area of his spine.
After a couple of days in recovery, the day then came to turn the device on and begin his therapy. With his mother by his side, emotions bubbled over when Isaac was immediately able to move his legs for the first time in years. What’s more, he was actually able to stand up later that day using the parallel bars.
I didn’t think I’d be able to do that until quite some time into the program, so I was very surprised!”
With so many positive results in short a short time, Isaac was cautiously optimistic about his epidural stimulation therapy. Regardless, he was happy to see any kind of progress and he was ready to find out how much progress he could make.
With his family, friends and the entire clinical team encouraging him, he continued his journey to recovery.
