Due to the initial results obtained at the Keck Medical Centre, of the University of Southern California, many patients have regained hope, as some people have been able to reclaim independence after suffering from a severe spinal cord injury.
Kristopher Boesen of Bakersfield suffered a traumatic injury to his spinal cord after a horrendous car accident that changed his life forever. The parents of the 21 year old, Rodney and Annette, were told that their son would be paralysed for life from the neck down and yet they decided not to surrender.
It was shortly after the accident that they found out how their young son qualified for a clinical study that could potentially help him regain back some of his autonomy. The Keck Medicine Centre of USC, working in collaboration with Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Centre, had a surgical team lead by Charles Lui, MD, PhD and director of the USC Neurorestoration Center. During this medical study, an experimental dose of 10 million stem cells were injected into Kris´ cervical spine.
Within a fortnight, Kris began showing noticeable signs of improvement. After three months, he was able to eat independently, write a few words on a sheet of paper, use his telephone and hug his loved ones for the first time since his accident. Not only that, the sensation and movements in both arms and hands has also improved tremendously and now Kris will be able to live a more independent life.
According to Dr. Liu, the lead scientist behind this study:
As of 90 days post-treatment, Kris has gained significant improvement in his motor function, up to two spinal cord level (…). In Kris’ case, two spinal cord levels means the difference between using your hands to brush your teeth, operate a computer or do other things you wouldn’t otherwise be able to do, so having this level of functional independence cannot be overstated.”
Cutting-edge surgeries and regenerative medicine such as this one are examples of how there is hope for many using stem cells that will greatly help neurorestoration. What was once only a dream has now become a plausible reality. The lives of thousands of patients with a spinal cord injury can be hugely improved with these unique methodologies.
Stem cell treatments available today, such as the one provided by Verita Neuro, are being really effective and have changed the lives of many.
