It goes without saying that following a balanced wholesome diet is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy is by far the most sensible choice anybody can make for well-being. At Verita Neuro we strongly advise our patients to follow this principle; however, the diet that we recommend for our neurodegenerative patients is the Ketogenic Diet.
Ketogenic Diet Explained
The Ketogenic diet involves lowering carbohydrate consumption and increasing the amount of fats a person consumes. This radical change aims to modify the body’s metabolism away from burning sugar and carbs as fuel to burning fats instead, in the form of ketones which are created in the liver. Once this happens, the patient is in a state known as ketosis which is the ultimate goal of this diet.
Ketogenic diets have been used for treating patients with Epilepsy, but now research is also suggesting that the Ketogenic diet could be beneficial in slowing down the progression of different types of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and even Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). There are many benefits that can be obtained from following a Ketogenic diet. It will increase insulin sensitivity and lower the body’s blood sugar. Weight loss can also be achieved without losing muscle mass and it has the added benefit of helping to regulate your appetite and control hunger. Furthermore, it will even help reduce inflammation and free radicals, keeping genes healthy.
In modern diets, the excessive amount of refined carbohydrates and sugars may be pro-inflammatory. Continuous consumption of these foods can increase blood sugar and insulin levels, which when chronically elevated can trigger an inflammatory response. Introducing healthier fats as part of our daily diet will serve as an anti-inflammatory, so the more we rely on fats as our main source of fuel, the healthier our bodies will be in many respects.
Ketogenic Diet Food List
Verita Neuro recommends this diet not only to our patients, but to anyone. Welcome healthy fats back to your table such as nuts, seeds, cold water fish, flax, chia, hemp seeds, grass-fed beef, extra-virgin olive oil or guacamole, whilst at the same time, try to eliminate sugars and reduce the amount of carbohydrates you consume. An increase in the healthy fats will greatly boost your general wellbeing.
If this new and challenging goal heads the list of changes to make to improve your health, you will soon reap the rewards which are already been enjoyed by Verita Neuro’s many patients. You will be glad that you took the step.
